This information tells you what your child will be learning each term in school.
Autumn Term
These are some of the things you can do:
- Request books from your local library so they have a wider choice of books to read
- Find information from the internet about the topics we are learning
- Help your child to learn their key words or spellings given to them every week using the READ SAY WRITE CHECK strategy.
- Complete optional home learning activities from the school website
- Read with your child every day for at least 10 minutes
- Label everything – PE kits, uniform (including shoes), water bottles, bookbags, etc.
English
Our focus this term in English
- Writing about themselves and their families based on books such as My Mum, My Dad (Anthony Browne) We are all Different, From Head to Toe (Eric Carle) and The Dot (Peter Reynolds)
- Traditional Tales – stories such as Goldilocks and the Three bears, The Gingerbread Man and Handa’s Surprise
- Sequencing stories, describing characters, story language,
- e.g. Once upon a time….Happily ever after.
- Stories from other cultures based on festivals
Some of the skills we will be focusing on in English this term are:
- Correct pencil grip
- Letter formation
- Recognising upper and lower case letters
- Using capital letters and full stops
- Using finger spaces
- Phonics for reading and writing
Maths
In Maths we will be learning to:
- Count reliably at least 20 objects and beyond.
- Read and write numbers to at least 20.
- Know how many tens and ones are in a given number
- Find 1 more and 1 less of a given number to 20 (and beyond)
- Add and subtract within 10 and up to 20
- 2D and 3D shapes and their properties, e.g. corners, sides
The 1st topic in the autumn term is Marvellous Me! and the 2nd is Traditional Tales:
Science
- Naming and identifying parts of the body; thinking about what they do
- Learning about the 5 senses and their associated body parts
- Naming materials and their properties, e.g. wood, metal, glass, plastic, fabric, soft, hard, bendy, rough and smooth.
- Observing seasonal changes (this will continue throughout the year)
Art & DT
- Exploring different tools and media such as graphite pencils, oil pastels, chalk and watercolours.
- Creating different lines and shapes
- Using different brush strokes to create different effects
- Learning how to use different size brushes
- Learning how to use a chopping knife safely
- Creating a healthy fruit kebab
Geography
- Exploring world maps – labelling, continents, oceans and countries.
- Exploring where our families come from
- Describing the seasons and weather
History
- Looking at the children’s own histories including changes since birth, timelines
- Using a variety of sources, e.g. photos, books, the internet
- Using words and phrases related to time
- Learning about the lives of significant individuals in the past – linked with Black History Month
Music
- Clapping rhythms and playing rhythms on instruments
- Naming & identifying different musical instruments and finding a variety of ways of playing an instrument
RE
- Learning about what is real, i.e. people believe in things that they can’t always see such as God.
- Looking at creation stories from Christianity, Islam and Judaism, as well as other religious stories from these faiths.
Computing
- Learning how to switch laptops on and off
- How to log on and off
- Using programs to create simple pictures with text
PSHE
- Learning school rules and routines
- Learning about feelings, friendships and families
Spring Term
We really value your support and the help that you can give your child with their learning. These are some of the things you can do:
- Request books from the local library so your child has a wider choice of books to read
- Help your child to learn tricky words and practise using them in different sentences
- Practise forming capital letters and lower-case letters correctly
- Read with your child every day for at least 10 minutes
- Practise mental maths for 10 minutes every day e.g., counting forwards and backwards to 50, number bonds etc
English
The stories we will focus on this term are The Naughty Bus; The Way Back Home; The Tiger who came to Tea; and The Storm Whale.
- We will:
- Read and retell each story orally and focus on new vocabulary learnt
- Create our own versions of the stories by changing the characters or settings
- Continue to learn how to correctly form lower case letters and capital letters of the correct size and orientation
- Learn to use capital letters, finger spaces, full stops, question marks and exclamation marks in writing
- Focus on learning the alternative graphemes for the following phonemes: ai, ar, er, oi, ow, ee, igh, oa, ew, or, oo, j, e, ch, w, f, n, v, i
Maths
We will be learning to
- Recall number bonds to 10 and 20
- Count in steps of 2, 5 and 10
- Focus on numbers to 50. This will include reading, writing, ordering, adding and taking away
- Make numbers using Dienes – up to 50 and beyond (not past 100). We will learn to draw Dienes so that they can be used for addition and subtraction.
- We will learn about commutativity focusing on addition and subtraction
- Use the < > and = signs. We will use these signs to compare and order numbers.
- Measure length and height using cubes and in centimetres, using rulers
- Measure weight using words such as heavier, lighter and using balancing scales
There are 2 topics in the Spring term: The 1st is Transport and the 2nd is Animals
Science
We will be looking at The Seasons (winter and spring) and Animals including Humans. This will include learning about
- How animals are classified with a focus on mammals, fish and birds.
- We will also learn about how animals can be sorted by their features or by the food they eat.
History
- We will focus on learning about how transport has changed over time and how this has affected people’s lives.
Geography
- We will be learning to create maps.
- We will focus on the school and drawing maps to direct each other around school.
- We will also be looking at hot and cold areas of the world and where specific animals come from.
Art
- We will be learning about Nick Mackman and how she used clay to create sculptures.
- We will create our own transport based sculpture.
DT
- We will be learning about Antoni Gaudi.
- We will also be learning how to design and create structures.
- We will be creating structures for an animal.
RE
We will be thinking about the questions, ‘How do we know?’ and ‘What is our situation?’ These two topics will involve learning about which symbols are important in different faiths and learning about different religious festivals.
Computing
We will learn how to code by creating a simple sequence of instructions using an online programme. We will also learn how to use basic keys on a keyboard to type simple sentences in Word.
PSHE
We will be learning about how to stay safe and lead a healthy lifestyle.
Music
We will be exploring different genres including reggae and rap. We will listen to and appraise a variety of songs as well as identifying the instruments used in these songs.
Summer Term

- Practice forming capital letters and lower-case letters correctly
- Read with your child every day for at least 10 minutes
- Practice mental maths for 10 minutes every day e.g., counting forwards and backwards to 50 and beyond, counting in 2s, 5s or 10s.
English
We will:
- Read and retell each story orally and focus on new vocabulary learnt
- Create our own versions of the stories by changing the characters or settings
- Read and perform poems
- Write poems about animals that live in the sea
- Read non-fiction books and information on sea animals
- Create fact files about an animal from the sea
- Continue to learn how to correctly form lower case letters and capital letters of the correct size and orientation
- Learn to use capital letters, finger spaces, full stops, question marks and exclamation marks in writing
- Use ‘and’ or ‘because’ to extend sentences
Maths
We will be learning to
- Count to and from 100 starting at any given number
- Adding and taking away numbers up to 100
- Solve problems involving multiplication and division, e.g. through counting in 2s, 5s, 10s and using arrays
- Recognise and find half and quarter of an object, shape or quantity
- Recognise the value of coins
- Read the time to the hour and half hour
- Describing position, direction and movement
The 1st topic in the term is Heroes & Heroines and the 2nd is Under The Sea
Science
- Looking at the seasons of spring & summer
- Identifying and naming common flowers and trees
- Learning about the parts of a plant
- Planting in the school environment
PSHE
- Learning about what the environment is and how we impact it
- Learning about ways to help improve the environment
- Learning about how we can improve our local environment
- Thinking about what loss means in different ways, e.g. loss of a toy, a friend, moving house or losing a grandparent
- Learning what money is and where it comes from
- Learning about the cost of everyday items
- Taking part in Mental Health Week
Art & DT
- Looking at the work of Roy Lichtenstein & Robyn Collier
- Learning how to make moving pictures by using sliders
- Exploring different types of paint
- Mixing paint
- Creating a seascape using watercolours
Geography
- Using globes and atlases
- Using maps to locate continents and oceans
- Looking at who Christopher Columbus was and where he travelled to and why
History
We will be learning about Real life heroes and heroines, e.g. Nelson Mandela and Mother Teresa
Music
- Learning songs about ‘imagination’
- Learning to play glockenspiels to accompany our singing
RE
- Learning about rules within religions and how they play a role. We will look at different religious stories.
- Exploring the ideas of love and kindness across different religions.
Computing
- Using a simple graphing programme to create pictographs and block graphs
- Programming simple robots to move forwards, backwards, left and right
Other Information
PE
Each class will have 2 sessions of PE per week. On PE days children must come to school wearing their correct PE kit, which they will wear all day.
Class Assemblies
Each term each class will hold a class assembly which parents/ carers are invited to come and see.
