Sustainability at Colindale
At Colindale, we want our children to understand the world around them and recognise the part they can play in looking after it. Sustainability is reflected in what we teach, the choices we make as a school and the opportunities we give children to take action.
Our Sustainability Lead, Mrs Grigoriadou, works with staff, pupils and our Eco Committee to lead and develop this work across the school.
Our Eco-School
We are very proud to be an Eco-Schools Green Flag school. Our Eco Ambassadors represent pupils across the school, helping to lead campaigns, share ideas and encourage our whole school community to make more sustainable choices.
Learning from our environment
Our school grounds provide wonderful opportunities for children to learn about the natural world. Our garden, pond and outdoor areas are used to explore plants, wildlife, habitats and biodiversity, with children growing vegetables and herbs as part of their learning.
Taking action
Children and staff work together to reduce our environmental impact. This includes:
- Recycling and reducing food waste
- Encouraging walking, cycling and scooting to school
- Reducing energy use through our annual Switch Off Day and other initiatives
- Using solar panels, heat pumps and energy-efficient lighting
- Developing our grounds to support biodiversity
- Embedding sustainability within learning, assemblies and wider school activities.
Pupil leadership
Children are at the heart of our sustainability work. Through the Eco Committee, our Eco Ambassadors have opportunities to lead projects, influence others and turn their learning into action.
