We really value your support and the help that you can give your child with their learning. These are some of the things you can do
- Take them to the library regularly so they have a wider choice of books to read and look out for books related to this term’s learning: see below under curriculum areas.
- Use the Home Learning page on the school website.
- Help your child to practise all multiplication times tables regularly – up to 12 x 12
- Help your child to learn spellings given to them on Purple Mash. A useful strategy is to get your child to:
- LOOK at the word
- SAY the word
- COVER the word up
- WRITE the word without looking at it
- CHECK the spelling is correct, and repeat the above steps if necessary
- Please encourage your child to read regularly at home every day for 15 – 30 minutes.
- Support them to be independent and make sure they have everything they need in school on the right day e.g. their PE and swimming kits
English
- Narrative 1: The children will be exploring the story ‘Street Child’ by Berlie Doherty, examining the structure and style, and planning and writing their own chapter.
- Biography: The children will be exploring and investigating biographies and researching and writing their own short biography of an influential person.
- Persuasive Text: The children will be exploring persuasive techniques in order to encourage people to visit a holiday resort in space.
- Poetry: The children will read and write a variety of different poems on the theme of
- ‘weather’ and learn to use a range of poetic techniques.
- Narrative 2: The children will explore the story of ‘Way Home’ by Libby Hathorn and develop understanding of character, plot and style. They will write diaries as the main character.
- Theatre review: after a trip to the theatre, the children will write a review about the show they have seen, persuading other people to see the show.
Maths
- Number and place value:
- Reading, writing and ordering numbers up to a thousand.
- Round any number up to a million to the
- nearest 10, 100, 1000 or 10,000, 100,000. Interpret negative numbers.
- Addition and subtraction: Use informal pencil and paper methods to support record or explain addition and subtraction problems, and extend written methods to column addition and subtraction. Add numbers with more than 4 digits and solve addition and subtraction multistep problems.
- Multiplication and division: Use doubling or halving to support multiplication and division. Multiply numbers with up to 4 digits by 1 and 2 digit numbers. Divide numbers up to 4 digits using formal written methods of short division including remainders.
Our topic this term is ‘Travel through Space and Time’ with a particular focus on Space and the Victorians
Science
The children will learn how to describe the movement of the Earth and other planets relative to the sun in the solar system. They will also learn how to describe the movement of the moon relative to the Earth. The children will also be learning about a variety of different forces.
History
The children will be learning about a significant turning point in British history – the changes that occurred in London during the Victorian period. This will include how travel changed during this period, what life was like in Victorian London, what life was like for Victorian children and what is the legacy of the Victorians.
Geography
The children will learn to identify the position and purpose of the lines of latitude, longitude, the Equator, the Northern Hemisphere, the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, the Arctic and Antarctic Circles, the Prime Greenwich Meridian, and describe how travel through time zones affects timekeeping.
Music
The children will be focusing on Classroom Jazz using glockenspiels as well as learning to sing the rap song The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air using instruments to accompany it.
Art
The children will study the works of Giacomo Balla and explore using different colours and techniques to create their own space themed painting.
D & T
The children will be creating a moving toy based on a traditional story chosen by Year 1 children.
PSHE
The children will focus on the topic of emotional wellbeing, awareness of mental health, personal safety, self-respect, setting their own goals and targets, being left out and stereotypes and diversity.
RE
The children will be exploring Anne Taves’ ‘Big Questions’, focusing on what is real and where do we come from?
Computing
The Children will learn about word processing and coding.
Spring Term
These are some of the things you can do:
- Take them to the library regularly so they have a wider choice of books to read and look out for books related to this term’s learning: Early Islamic Civilisation; properties and changes of materials in science; Islamic religion; Traditional Tales from the Middle East (e.g. Arabian Nights); and Poetry by Michael Rosen
- Find information from the internet about the topics we are learning – see above
- Please encourage your child to look at the home learning page of the school website to complete some activities during the term
- Your child can bring their completed work or photos of their work into class so it can be displayed.
- Help your child to practise all multiplication times tables regularly – up to 12 x 12
- Spelling – we will no longer be having spelling tests, but good spelling skills are important and will be taught in school. You can find the key words children need to learn and strategies they can use to help.
- Please encourage your child to read regularly at home every day for 15 – 30 minutes.
- Support them to be independent and make sure they have everything they need in school on the right day e.g. their PE and swimming kits
English
- Narrative writing: Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo. The children will write their own narratives based on scenes from the story, with a focus on describing setting, character and feelings.
- Non-Chronological Report: They will learn how to write a guide for surviving in the jungle based on what they find out from events in Kensuke’s Kingdom.
- Traditional Tales from the Middle East: The children
- will write their own version of a traditional tale, based on a known story.
- Information text: The children will write an information text about the Silk Road linking it to their history and geography lessons.
Maths
The children will learn to
- Identify numbers and divide using the formal method of division
- Calculate and recognise fractions of amounts and
- Read, write, order and compare decimal numbers with up to three decimal places
- Recognise and calculate percentages of amounts
Science
They will be learning about changing states, e.g., solids, liquids and gases, and understand reversible and irreversible changes.
D & T
They will be planning, making and evaluating traditional cultural dishes.
History
They will be learning about the Early Islamic Civilisation.
Geography
They will be locating geographical and physical features of early Baghdad in 900AD and looking at its economical features (such as trade) to identify why it became a part of the “Silk Route”.
Music
The children will be learning how to play the Ukulele each week with a professional music teacher from Barnet’s Music Service.
Art
The children will be learning about Sonia Delaunay focusing on Orphism (abstract art).
Spanish
In Spanish, they will be learning about:
- My Town
- Places in the town: market, shop, supermarket, park, bank, café, clothes shop, cinema, pharmacy, church, mosque, temple, train station
- Revise directions: Is there, here, it is, on the corner, on the right on the left.
- Ask for and give directions to a place

Computing
The children will be learning coding skills using Purple Mash.
PSHE
They will be learning about stereotypes and diversity; healthy lifestyles; friendships and dealing with bullying; working together; aspirations; and learning about media literacy and digital reliance.
Summer Term

- Myths and Legends: We will read and explore Ancient Greek myths and legends. The children will learn about the different features of these stories and the types of characters involved, and write in the style of a known myth or legend.
- Information text: Children will learn about what happened during a significant battle of the Ancient Greek era, and then write a third person report about it, developing a more formal style of writing.
- Play Scripts: Children will read further Ancient Greek myths and legends and then turn one of them into a play script to be performed.
- Non-chronological Report: Children will be writing a non-chronological report about life in Ancient Greek times related to the Greek workshop.
Maths
- Decimals: Solve problems involving number up to three decimal places. Multiply and divide whole numbers and those involving decimals by 10, 100 and 1000. Use all four operations to solve problems involving measure [for example, length, mass, volume, money] using decimal notation, including scaling.
- Geometry: Position and Direction: Identify, describe and represent the position of a shape following a reflection or translation, using the appropriate language, and know that the shape has not changed.
- Measurements – Converting Units: Convert between different units of metric measure [for example, km and m; cm and m; cm and mm; g and kg; l and ml] Understand and use approximate equivalences between metric units and common imperial units such as inches, pounds and pints.
- Measures –Volume: Estimate volume [for example using 1cm blocks to build cuboids (including cubes)] and capacity [for example, using water] Use all four operations to solve problems involving measure.
- Time – Conversion and timetables. To solve problems involving converting between units of time.
Science
- Living things and their habitats: further learning about life cycles in relation to the design and creation of the school pond. Describe the process of reproduction in some plants and animals.
- Animals including humans: Describe the changes as humans age and learn about the stages experienced in puberty (see also PSHE).
History
Throughout the term, children will be exploring aspects of the Ancient Greek civilisation, how Ancient Greece was ruled, their achievements and the role of women. Towards the end of the term, children will consider how fair Ancient Greek society was.
Geography
Children will learn about the impact of importing and exporting goods worldwide as well as from their local area.
Art
- They will learn to design and make lyres(Ancient Greek musical instrument) using Modroc.
- They will decorate their lyres following Ancient Greek patterns.
D & T
- They will explore Ancient Greek sandal designs, learning about paper patterns, seam allowances, and prototyping using dipryl.
- They will experiment with various joining techniques and materials, such as stitching, lacing, buckles, and straps, to create their own unique sandals inspired by history.
Computing
- Children will create a game using 2DIY 3D on Purple Mash.
- Children will understand and create their own databases.
PSHE
Children will learn about:
- reproductive organs, physical and emotional changes during puberty and the importance of good personal hygiene during puberty.
- the risks, effects and the law concerning various legal and illegal drugs, challenging myths about drug use and drug users and learning strategies to resist drug use.
- different types of relationships and characteristics of healthy family life.
- how local democracy works.
- how making informed choices can help them make the most of their money, and how people’s spending decisions can affect others and the environment.
RE
The Children will learn
- BQ4: What is our situation?
Children explore different religions and worldviews in their local community, understand diversity within religions, and learn how beliefs influence responses to real-life issues like poverty or homelessness. - BQ5: What is our goal?
Children learn about the idea of an ‘ultimate goal’ in different worldviews (e.g. heaven, moksha, improving the world) and reflect on how these goals influence choices and behaviour. - BQ6: How do we get there?
Children study key religious figures and teachings, understanding how guidance (e.g. commandments, pillars, paths) helps people live well, and reflect on who guides them in their own lives.

Each class will have 1 session of PE and 1 session of swimming per week.
Please ensure that your child wears their PE kit on the designated day and bring in their swimming kits on the appropriate day and they will be brought home once used.
