This information tells you what your child will be learning this term in school. We really value your support and the help that you can give your child with their learning.
Autumn Term
These are some of the things you can do:
- Take them to the library
- Find information from the internet on the topics they are studying
- Help your child with their home learning – there are lots of ideas on the school website
- Read with your child everyday
- Help them to make sure they have everything they need in school on the right day
- Practice the times tables with the children ready for their statutory times table check in June. Starting early will help them, take a little and often approach. A little practice, often.
English
Our focus this term in English:
- ‘The Lost Happy Endings’- descriptive fantasy story to use as a model for writing their own story.
- Newspapers and Magazines – Creating a news article about a historical Roman event.
- Creating their own fantasy/adventure stories for their class animations.
- Black History Month – writing about key historical events
- Poetry – descriptive verse about the seasons
- The Tear Thief – descriptive narrative diary entry writing
- Persuasive letter writing
Maths
- Add and subtract numbers with up to 4 digits, using the formal written methods of column addition and subtraction where appropriate.
- Estimate and use inverse operations to check answers to a calculation. E.g. 22+34=56 so 56-34=22
- Solve addition and subtraction two step problems in contexts, deciding which operations and methods to use and why
The first topic in Autumn is the Romans and the second topic is Lights, Camera, Action!
History
We will be learning about the Roman Empire and its impact on Britain, contrasting Ancient Roman times with present day and looking at the power of the Roman army and Boudicca’s rebellion.
Geography
We will be locating Italy within Europe, capital cities and understanding their importance, exploring directions on a compass and using maps to annotate an area of Rome identifying features.

Spring Term
We really value the help that you can give your child with their learning. These are some of the things you can do:
- Please encourage your child to look at the home learning page of the school website to complete some activities during the term. Your child can bring their completed work or photos of their work into class so it can be displayed
- Visit the local and mobile libraries regularly, so your child has a wider choice of books to read and can choose books about this term’s topic, especially Vikings and Anglo Saxons.
- Help your child to practise all their times tables up to 12×12 regularly, in preparation for the summer term’s Multiplication Tables Check. The hardest are often, 7, 8 and 12 times tables.
- Read with your child and encourage them to read regularly at home every day for 15 – 20 minutes
- Please ensure all clothing, especially coats, are labelled, especially as we enter the coldest months
English
- Reading and writing versions of Beowulf, an Anglo-Saxon saga
- Writing and performing Beowulf inspired playscripts
- Reading the fiction text Weslandia and creating our own imagined worlds
- Reading Snowdrop, a classic fairy tale with a twist, then writing a twisted story of our own
- Learning about Volcanoes and writing a non-fiction report fact file
- There will be regular handwriting sessions, following the school’s handwriting policy.
Maths
These are the objectives we will be covering this term:
- Multiplication and division – solve problems by multiplying 3 digit numbers by 1 digit numbers
- Finding the area of 2D shapes
- Times tables up to 12×12 (and the division facts)
- Fractions – recognise and show common equivalent fractions
- Counting up and down in tenths and hundredths, including decimals in money
History
We will be learning about:
- Anglo Saxons Raids and invasion
- Alfred the Great, first King of England
- Bringing Christianity to Britain

- Watch the videos from Horrible Histories about the Vikings on the internet (they are very funny)
- Help your child to practise all their times tables up to 12×12 regularly, in preparation for the summer term’s Multiplication Tables Check. They need to know them all!
- Read with your child and encourage them to read regularly at home every day for 15 – 20 minutes. Don’t forget to ask them questions too, for example, ‘How is this story similar to…?’ What tells us the character is angry/sad/scared/happy?’ ‘Why did the author choose this word?’

PE
Each class will have 1 session of PE a week and 1 session of swimming on alternating weeks. Please note that children may wear their PE kits to school on their PE days and will stay wearing their kits.
