Our focus this term in English:

- The children will be learning how to retell their own version of stories, poetry, non-chronological reports.
- They will also learn how to use language that describes and impacts the reader.
Maths
- Say what each digit’s place value is in a 3 digit number e.g. 281 has 2 hundreds, 8 tens and 1 one.
- Read, write and order numbers with 3 digits i.e. Hundreds, tens and ones
- Add and subtract numbers with up to 3 digits mentally and using formal written methods of column addition and subtraction.
- Estimate the answer to a calculation and use inverse operations to check answers e.g. 8+2=10 so 10-2=8
- Solve problems, including missing number problems, using number facts, place value and more complex addition and subtraction.
The topic in the Autumn term is Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age (Prehistoric Era)
History
We will be learning about changes in Britain and the world from the Stone Age to the Iron Age and the changes in how people lived throughout the Prehistoric Era.

Spring Term
These are some of the things you can do:
- Take them to the library regularly so they have a wider choice of books to read and look out for books about this term’s topic, especially books on Rivers. Here is the address of our local library, Colindale Library, 7 Bristol Ave, London NW9 4BR
- Encourage your child to look at the home learning page of the school website to complete some activities during the term Year 3 Home Learning Page – Colindale Primary School. Your child can bring their completed work or photos of their work into class so it can be displayed.
- Help your child to practise all their times tables regularly, particularly the 3, 4 and 8 times
- Help your child to learn spellings that can be found on the home learning page.
- Encourage your child to read regularly at home every day for 15 – 20 minutes.
- The weather is now getting colder, please remember children should be wearing a coat for school and when they are outside playing. Please ensure the coats are named.
English
- Narrative – Children will be reading illustrated version of the story The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe by C.S Lewis. They will be focusing on including dialogue that is correctly punctuated using inverted commas, in their own versions of the story.
- Poems on a theme – Children will be writing and performing a range of poems on our topic- Our World – including ‘The Magic Box’, by Kit Wright.
- Non-Fiction writing – This will be linked to their geography learning about Rivers where they will create a persuasive advert. They will also write a non-chronological report based on their interests.
- We will continue to focus throughout the term on constructing complex sentences by using more complex conjunctions such as ‘but’, ‘so’, ‘when’, ‘until’ and ‘or’, as well as introducing the punctuation of inverted commas for speech.
- Children will be reading in school daily and also will be practising their joined handwriting regularly, aiming to achieve a clear and consistent style.
Maths
- Using different strategies to divide and multiply using a part whole model or column method.
- Consolidating their understanding of place value.
- Working with fractions, equivalent fractions, non-unit fractions, and adding and subtracting fractions.
- Measuring length and perimeter.
- Learning about mass and capacity by reading scales and adding and subtracting amounts.
- Continuing to learn and recall the times tables by heart and derive related division facts.
The Topic for this term is Our World
History, Geography, Art and Design Technology
The children will be learning about
- The water cycle and the importance of water
- The River Thames and the structure of a river.
- Using maps and photographs to study how transport and technology changed Colindale.
- Old and new maps of Colindale and comparing them over time.
- The children will study the artist Faith Ringgold and create large scale paintings inspired by her style.
- How to prepare nutritious food (vegetable lasagne) in Design Technology.
Science
- Investigating light and shadow.
- Looking at the human skeleton and naming bones in the body.
- Investigating human muscles and their functions.
RE & PHSE
- Learning about what beliefs are, how they find out about beliefs, and where they come from.
- Discussing how beliefs, religious or not, impact behaviour and choices.
- Looking at healthy lifestyles- having a balanced diet, being healthy – mentally, emotionally, and physically.

PE
In PE lessons will be focused on basketball and gymnastics.
Spanish
- Consolidating numbers to 20.
- Consolidating the names of colours.
- Learning names of shapes.
- Learning the names of different foods.
- Describing how they feel.
Music
The children will using the glockenspiels to play and compose their own music to various songs.
Summer Term
We really value the help that you can give your child with their learning. These are some of the things you can do:
- Please look at the home learning page for Year 3 and for the Summer topic on Egyptians for ideas of how to support your child’s learning at home.
- There are lots of ways you can engage your child at home about Ancient Egypt, The British Museum is a great place to start. Your local library will have lots of books, and the Horrible Histories TV show has lots of video on the internet.
- Please continue to read each day, don’t forget to talk to your child about what they are reading. Here are some questions you could ask. ‘Why did the character…?’ ‘What do you think will happen next?’ How do you know that…?’
- Times tables should continue to be a focus, practice the 3, 4 and 8s regularly at home.
English
In English we will be:
- Reading The Scarab’s Secret and retelling the story
- Reading the story of Egyptian Cinderella and writing play scripts
- Writing a persuasive advertisement
- Writing poetry on Egyptians
- Writing letters to our new teachers
- We will continue focusing throughout the term on using a wider range of conjunctions (when, until, while, that), using adverbs to describe verbs as well as consolidating the basics of capital letters, including for names and punctuation.
- Children will be reading in school daily and should also be reading at home with an adult every day.
- Children will be practising their joined handwriting.

The Topic this term will be – Ancient Egyptians

- Explore the clay work of the artist Tammy Durham to make Egyptian artefacts
