Autumn Term
These are some of the things you can do:
- Request books from the local library so your child has a wider choice of books to read.
- Find information from the internet about the topics we are learning.
- Help your child to learn spellings given to them every week using the READ SAY WRITE CHECK strategy.
- Read with your child every day for at least 10 minutes and begin to learn 2, 3, 5 & 10x tables.
- Complete some of the home learning activities from the school website.
- Help them to make sure they have everything they need in school on the right day e.g. their swimming kit.
English
Our focus this term in English:
- Recounts – this will include writing letters or diary entries describing events from the past.
- Non – chronological reports – children will learn how to structure these reports. They will also write their own reports based on the city of London.
- Poetry – reading classic poems written by famous poets from the past. The children will write their own poems based on those read.
- Stories with familiar settings – children will read stories set in familiar places e.g. forests, woods, parks. They will learn to describe characters and settings and use these in their own stories.
Maths
- Count, read, write and compare numbers to 100. Count to and from 100, forwards and backwards from any number. Partition numbers up to 100 into tens and ones.
- Count in steps of 2, 5 and 10 from any number forwards and backwards.
- Identify 1 more or less than any number.
- Know and use number bonds to 20.
- Add and subtract numbers within 100.
- Name common 2D and 3D shapes and describe some of their properties.
- Learn what multiplication and division is and how to work out simple facts such as 3 x 5 and 10 ÷ 2.
The topic in autumn 1 is London and in autumn 2 is Famous People.
Science
- Looking at materials such as wood, stone, fabric, plastic, etc.
- Describing the properties of materials, such as hard, smooth, soft, rigid, flexible, etc.
- Investigating which material is the best for different item, e.g. curtains for a baby’s bedroom.
History
- Learn about events such as the Great Fire of London and The Great Plague.
- Learning about Florence Nightingale, Edith Cavell and Mary Seacole.
Geography
- Using atlases to mark on a map the countries and capital cities of the UK.
- Identifying similarities and differences between Colindale and the city of London.
Art & DT
- Learning about different painting techniques, colour mixing and brush strokes.
- Learning about Vincent Van Gogh.
- Creating paintings that depict The Great Fire of London.
- Learn about Henry Ford.
- Design and make our own cars of the future.
RE
- Learning about what is real, e.g. how can we believe in things we can’t see.
- Looking at stories of miracles in Christianity and Islam.
- Learning about where we come from through different points of view such as through religious creatin stories and other world views.
Computing
- Teach pupils to switch on/off; log on/off.
- Learn how to use the Internet safely.
- Use simple drawing software to create pictures.
- Use PowerPoint to create presentations.
PSHE
- Learn about relationships and feelings including who to speak to when worried.
- Recognise and celebrate strengths.
- Understand what bullying is and how to deal with this.
Music
Learn to copy and create rhythms as a group and clap the beat to a piece of music.
Spring Term

Our focus this term in English: The stories we will focus on this term are from across the world. They are Lila and the Secret of Rain; Leaf, Jack and the Beanstalk, and The Tiger Child. We will
- Read and retell each story orally and focus on new vocabulary learnt
- Create our own versions of the stories by changing the characters or settings
- Write a non-chronological report about polar bears
Maths
We will be learning to:
- Recall number bonds to and within 20, and knowing related facts, e.g. 3 + 7 = 10, 13 + 7 = 20, 20 – 13 = 7, 10 – 7 =3, etc
- Count in steps of 2, 3, 5 and 10 from any number forwards and backwards
- Add and subtract with exchange, e.g. 25 + 39 or 43 – 19
- Learn to recognise and use symbols for pounds (£) and pence (p); know the coins and notes used in the UK; combine amounts to make a particular
- value
- Learn to find different combinations of coins that equal the same amount of money, e.g. different ways to make 40p
- Learn the 2, 3, 5 and 10 times tables and related division facts, e.g. 2
- x 5 = 10 and therefore 10 ÷ 5 = 2
- Revise strategies for multiplication and division; learn about commutativity; and solving problems involving x and ÷
- Learn how to measure length, height, mass and volume; choose and use the appropriate standard units, e.g. cm, kg
- Compare and order lengths, heights, mass and volume
The topic in spring is Tales Around The World.
Science
We will be looking at the topics of living things and their habitats and plants. This will include learning about what habitats are; micro habitats; and food chains. The topic of plants will include learning how different conditions effect the growth of plants; the similarities and differences between seeds and bulbs.
History
History will include finding out about how Colindale Primary school has changed over time. We will use sources such as photos of the old building and uniform to learn about the similarities and differences.
Geography
Geography will include learning about how countries around the world are different. We will focus on the village of Mugurameno in Zambia and the comparison of Colindale in England. We will look at the features of both areas; what life is like in both areas; and the weather and climate of both.
Art
We will be learning about the architect Zaha Hadid. We will be looking at the buildings she designed and designing our own building for the future.
DT
In DT we will be learning how to sew and making a hand puppet based on a character from the stories we have read in English.
RE
In RE we will continue to focus on Christianity, Islam and Sikhism. During this term children will learn about their sacred texts and celebrations from those faiths.
Computing
We will learn what databases are and how to use them with a simple programme. We will also learn how to write simple sentences using Word.
PSHE
We will be learning about how to lead a healthy lifestyle and about the theme of ‘global food’. We will learn where food comes from and what fair trade is.
Music
We will be learning to sing and appraise a variety of songs, and to compose a piece of music using a glockenspiel.
Summer Term
These are some of the things you can do.
- Please read with your child for 10 minutes daily and focus on their understanding of what is being read.
- Practice mental maths with your child, e.g. times tables, odd and even numbers, adding and taking away multiples of 10.
- Practice the weekly spellings sent home.
- Practice handwriting so that letters are of a consistent size and practice joining some letters
English

- Reading The Tiny Seed, instructions on how to make something, and The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch.
- Innovating our own story and instructions based on books read.
- Studying authors, e.g. Ronda Armitage. Learning about which kinds of stories the author writes and how the illustrations add to the story.
- Looking at the features of non-chronological reports
- Writing reports about the British Seaside
- Reading and writing poems about the seaside.
Maths

Other Information
PE, Swimming & Library
Each class will have 1 session of PE and 1 session of swimming per week. Children must wear PE kits to school on the day they have PE. They will stay in their kit all day. If plimsolls are worn for PE, please send in school shoes for children to change into:

Year 2 will hold their class assemblies in Spring & Summer Term, parents and carers are invited to watch.
